First and most importantly, I have to share that I might get to be a mini travel photographer while I"m here! (my size won't change, but the 'job' is small). The trip planner at the school saw my Cayos Cuchinos pics and said wants to discuss having me go on trips (for free) to the islands and mountains to take pics so they can use them for advertising. My heart flip flopped and did somersaults when he asked. AH! I really hope it works out!
Secondly, a group of us went out in La Ceiba last night. I was with Monica (who's dutch), a British girl, an Italian guy, a Mexican girl, another American, and three Honduran guys. We had some pretty interesting discussions and all had very different opinions. I loved the diversity! We ended up at a bar with live music and dancers and attempted to salsa dance. It was a really good time!
Thirdly (is that a word?), I made to it El Porvenir today where I'll spend the next two months. Leaving Ceiba was a little bit sad since I had to say bye to Monica and my host sister. My sister wouldn't come out of her room because she didn't want to say goodbye. Abuelo said bye by kissing my arm (weird) and saying "buenas noches" even though it was in the morning. I made a grand exit by turning toward the door and bumping their shelf with my back pack and knocking off all of their picture frames. Only one shattered on the floor. Excellent.
So I am super excited about El Porvenir. It's so much nicer than La Ceiba because it's a smaller village rather than a city. It just feels more calm and laid back. There are barely any cars and the streets are mostly dirt/gravel. The girls told me they walk around/go for runs and are fine (i know, i'll still be careful). The house is a block from the beach and there are a lot more people outside and animals (esp horses) roaming around.
Although I expected my living situation to be glorified camping, it's actually very nice! It's a regular house and I have my own room with a double bed (mom, they provided sheets since I got the bigger bed) and shelves and a fan etc. We have a nice family room with a TV and a kitchen and two bathrooms. There are 3 bedrooms, the other two each have two girls in them, but one girl is leaving thursday (not sure if someone else will come). The girls took me to the grocery store today and I got some basic food items, I'll have to go back to Ceiba this week to do a bigger shopping trip.
Turns out I won't be working much while I'm here. I will be an assistant teacher for a class every morning from 8-11 and I'll have the option of helping the other 2 afternoon teachers everyday, but that's it. In July I'll take over an adult evening class once a week for a couple hours. I guess the morning teachers take the kids swimming a lot and play with the kids in the afternoon, but basically if I want to have my whole afternoon free I will. They suggested thinking of my own ideas/projects to fill some time.
I'm using internet now at the house of the people who started the Honduras Children program. They live a couple blocks from me and have wifi that we can use whenever they're home. If they're not, there's an internet cafe down the street.
I'm excited to get started and meet everyone tomorrow! It's very cool this evening. The weather thing says 82 degrees but it feels chilly like I could actually wear sleeves.
No photos this time, probably tomorrow :)
