So glad you guys are reading the blog! I didn't get to write last night because I went to the pool and got home too late to walk to school to use internet. Monica's host family belongs to the golf club here so we went with her host sister last night to go swimming. Her host sister is 22 and went to a bilingual school her whole life and therefore speaks perfect English. She has such an American accent and uses American slang it's kind of funny to hear her speak.
I graduated from Spanish school today!! I wore a cap and gown and walked down a long isle as they played Pomp and Circumstance in Spanish. Jusssst kidding, I'm so funny, I know! Really though, they had a little "party" for me and gave me a tshirt and a certificate and we all had ice-cream with bananas. Usually people stay for longer than a week and learn more Spanish than I did, and those people have to give speeches at their "parties." Luckily I avoided giving a speech, as I know my face would turn bright red and I would feel like an idiot. My teacher speaks only Spanish to me and since she is speaking slowly and probably in simple words, I can understand her, but my speaking is still not very good. I couldn't be happier with the school though, I really think I learned a lot in the past week and am excited to keep working on it!
Yesterday Monica and I walked around the city and attempted to take photos. I was dissapointed because there were so many photos I wanted to take but the Honduran people don't really like "gringos" (which is what they call Americans) and they gave me nasty looks when I had my camera out. It's also not very safe to be carrying around my camera, so I was trying to be aware of that. It's hard for me to gauge safety here, because I feel ok on the beach and walking around in the city, but the people at school really discourage it. Don't worry, I'm being very careful, which is kiiind of unusual for me.
So we ended up at the beach/pool, of course. The people there recognize us now!
On a not-so-nice note, I am SO sick of eating fried everything. Lunch and dinner has been fried eggs, fried potatoes, fried plantains, and re-fried beans. Barf. My favorite meal is now breakfast, which is cornflakes and milk. Mmm. Luckily the school gives us a lot of fruit in the morning, mangoes, pineapple, banana, etc. Looking forward to when I can cook for myself.
Had another encounter with La Cucaracha yesterday. Apparently we're room mates now. This time he was chillin with my shampoo and conditioner.
I'm with a couple girls at an internet cafe at the moment and I just went to the bathroom, and as usual there is no running water. Don't think I've mentioned this yet, but my house and school are often without running water. It hasn't been too much of a problem, I'm just glad I have hand sanitizer!
Tomorrow Monica, Hector (a guy from school) and I are going to Cuyos Cuchinos! They are two small islands in between La Ceiba and the bigger islands. We are taking a boat out and going snorkeling. Can't wait!
Miss you all!!
Congrats D on graduating! Now the fun stuff starts.
